Meet the Presenters

Presentation 1: "From BIM to Virtual Construction Services"

The presentation will explain how InteliBuild has over the past few years expanded the use of BIM technology and processes in several large projects, from simple model exchanges to value added services during both the design and construction phases - Renderings, walk-through, construction sequencing, site security validation, site planning, coordination assistance, etc. In addition to providing BIM consulting services to third party, InteliBuild has helped Canam Group to better collaborate with other stakeholders as a steel fabricator and joists/deck manufacturer in projects where BIM is being used - Better collaboration tools, availability of 3D components, 3D models integration, eApproval, etc. We will cover how we are deploying those services using scattered across our world-wide offices making use of various communication technology.
Jean Thibodeau - Senior Vice-President,
InteliBuild and Information Systems for the Canam Group
Jean Thibodeau joined Canam Group in 1997 as vice president, information technologies. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the École des Hautes Études Commerciales and began his career in information technologies in 1975. Over the years, he has acquired solid experience in varied fields, including natural resources, consulting engineering, aviation, maritime transportation, medical products, fabrication and IT consulting.

In 2004, Mr. Thibodeau was appointed as president of Technyx, a business unit of Canam Group, which offers the outsourcing of technical resources in the engineering, detailing and
specialized programming sectors from its offices in Brasov, Romania, and Kolkata, India.  In 2010, Technyx acquired InteliBuild, a virtual construction services company based in Hong Kong and serving the Asian market.  Using the combined experience of both organizations, the company introduced virtual construction services in its North American market. Jean Thibodeau is currently Senior Vice-President of InteliBuild and Information Systems for the Canam Group.

Presentation 2: "Upstream Value Added Services"

The presentation aims to demonstrate how beneficial it is to bring construction team members on board during the design phase.  The following projects will be over-viewed:
  • Mosaic Potash Colonsay Expansion project (Quebec Designer, Connection Engineer and Steel Detailer)
  • Edmonton International Airport Marriott Courtyard (Quebec Steel Detailer)
  • University of Alberta - Innovation Center for Engineering (Quebec Steel Detailer)

Those three projects will be used to demonstrate the following items:
  • Integrated services (Structural engineering, steel connection design and steel detailing)
  • Early involvement from Construction team for design optimization
  • Sharing coordination information through 3D models upstream and downstream
  • 3D Approval of shop drawings
  • BIM Tools in steel fabrication plants
  • BIM Tools on the field
Daniel Barbeau - BIM Coordinator - Production Manager,
CadMax
Daniel Barbeau is an industrial engineer who graduated from École Polytechnique in 2006 and is now a Partner at CadMax, a technical drafting firm specializing in steel detailing. His work is oriented around lean manufacturing principles adapted to the 3D modeling process. He sees the BIM and all the incremental innovations surrounding it as the perfect way to achieve productivity in the construction services.  Daniel is pursuing a Masters degree in Industrial engineering and also attends various user groups and forums in Québec to promote the use of BIM and collaboration throughout the construction industry.

Presentation 3: "BIM Coordination of Large Projects"

  • Project Files Management in the context of BIM
  • Network Infrastructure for BIM Projects
  • Project Files Access Control
  • Multidisciplinary Files Coordination
  • Using BIM Files for Analysis (LEED, 4D) and Interference Checking
  • Advantages of BIM
  • Risks Related to BIM
Pierre Henault - Vice-President of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for Transport, Infrastructure and Buildings Division,  SNC-Lavalin
Mr. Pierre Hénault, senior engineer with more than 20 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, is currently Vice-President of Mechanical and electrical Engineering for Transport, Infrastructure and Buildings Division at SNC-Lavalin. He holds a PMP certification (Project Management Professional) and he specializes in the design of mechanical systems and project management for facilities in healthcare, institutional and pharmaceutical sectors. He served as project manager on major fast track multidisciplinary projects, all of which were successfully completed, and two in which were awarded the “Léonard 2007” and “Léonard 2008” awards for the categories: “Project management” and “Industrial” respectively, given by the “Association of Consulting Engineers of Quebec” (AICQ).
Anthony Lapierre - Revit Administrator,
SNC Lavalin
Anthony Lapierre is a Revit Administrator at SNC-Lavalin. He has 10 years of experience in the construction industry that includes 4 years of BIM implementation. His career has progressed from an architectural technologist on various residential and commercial projects to BIM Manager in 2007. In 2008, he was given the opportunity to work in Dubai as a BIM Specialist for an architectural and engineering firm. That is where he developed an expertise in management of large-scale BIM projects. In 2010, he moved back to Canada and played a key role in the implementation of Revit on McGill University Health Centre by developing a BIM deployment Plan.

Meet the Roundtable Panelists

Roundtable Topic: "Opportunities and Challenges of Applying BIM in Practice"

In this session’s roundtable, we hope to answer some of the recurring questions that come up on BIM enabled projects: Were there any special contractual arrangements?  How was the scope of modeling defined? Was a BIM execution plan developed? Who mandated the use of BIM and who lead the process? Did everyone contribute to the model, including the subtrades? Were there any project partners that resisted using BIM? What were their reasons? Within your own office, who was the most/least receptive to training? Which BIM software tools were used? How were interoperability issues dealt with, if any?

Our panel is comprised of professionals from varying disciplines, with different types of experience with BIM who will candidly share their thoughts and examples from their own perspectives.

Patricia Hurley - Principal,
NFOE Architects
Mrs. Hurley graduated from University College Dublin, Ireland in 1983 and is project director for NFOE’s more significant commercial and industrial projects. She has also successfully managed many sophisticated research and production projects for the pharmaceutical, biotech and personal care industries. She has also previously been a CAD manager and college level CAD instructor and is currently director of the BIM integration process at NFOE.
Wissam Hijazi - BIM Specialist
EllisDon Construction
Wissam  Hijazi  is  an  experienced architect and BIM specialist with   EllisDon.  He  got  his  Masters  Degree  from  Concordia University  in  Building  Engineering  in  2009  and published 3 papers   related  to  his  thesis  research  "  Constructability Assessment  of  designs  using BIM technology" . With 5 years of construction   experience   he  has  been  responsible  for  the         successful  utilization of BIM on several high profile projects, including the $350m Toronto South Detention Centre. Currently he is managing the BIM implementation process for the $230m Design-Build Waypoint Mental Health Centre in Ontario.
