CanBIM Professional Certification Process

To successfully obtain certification, candidates must demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the specific competencies required for the respective certification levels. The intent of the Certification Process is to provide each candidate with ample opportunity to provide evidence supporting their competency in each of the certification levels.

Below is an outline of the CanBIM Certification Process.

The first step toward CanBIM certification begins with the completion of an application form, the payment of an application fee and the submission of all supporting documentation. Upon receipt of your application CanBIM will issue an invoice for payment. Once payment is received CanBIM will begin the Review process.

The candidate MUST provide evidence of their competency through a combination of:

  • completed application

  • written documents

  • confirmation of recognized BIM courses

  • recognized degree and/or diploma in a building-related and/or infrastructure-related discipline

  • documented proof of experience in executed building and/or infrastructure projects utilizing multi-discipline BIM

  • documented proof of Continued Professional Development

Each candidate’s submission is carefully reviewed for completeness.  Candidate applications will be checked to ensure all required and supporting documentation are provided. All applicants are encouraged to carefully read the application instructions found within each application. If the application is missing information or does not clearly communicate the required information then the application will be deferred until such time that the applicant provides the correct information. It is better to provide more detail in explaining experience than to provide a brief summary.

Applicants will be given 6 months to resubmit their information without having to pay the Certification Application Fee.   If the applicant submits the revised application after 6 months, the application is subject to a new Certification Application Fee.   Applications that meet all the required submission criteria are submitted for Assessment by the CanBIM Certification Assessment Panel (CCAP).

Once CanBIM has verified that the application meets all the required submission criteria, the application is then submitted for Assessment.  The CanBIM Certification Assessment Panel (CCAP) reviews applications for evidence of professional experience and required competencies. If approved, successful candidates are then invoiced for the Certification Fee  based on the approved level of certification.  Applicants that do not meet the required professional experience and competencies are offered three (3) options to pursue.

  1. Provide further information for clarification purposes,

  2. Upgrade Qualifications; the applicant may choose to obtain more experience before resubmitting at a later date or

  3. Accept CCAP's decision to Certify at a lower level of certification.

Unsuccessful candidates are advised of deficiencies in their submission and/or required competencies. Applications for certification will remain active for 6 months wherein the applicant can resubmit their application. Should the time frame to certification exceed 6 months the application for certification will expire and the applicant will be required to reapply.

Certification Delivery

Once approved for Certification, CanBIM will deliver the Certification package by mail or at one of the CanBIM Regional Sessions (Vancouver, Montréal, Calgary/Edmonton, Toronto). The applicant can choose to receive their Certification package in person at a Regional Session or by mail. CanBIM will not deliver the Certification package until final payment of the Certification Fee is received.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CanBIM Certification is valid for two (2) years. The Certification window begins from the date of the Certification Letter received in the Certification Package and ends on the last day of the month noted on CanBIM Certificate.  Certified Professionals are responsible for maintaining and/or upgrading  their professional experience during the Certification period and must submit CanBIM CPD Forms by the last day of the month noted on the CanBIM Certificate. CPD Forms can be found on the Professional Certification page of the CanBIM website under the Certification menu.

Please be sure to review the Certification Deadlines before submitting an application.
