DAY One

May 14, 2020

Keynote Presentation
30 mins
Pomerleau's Innovation Strategy
Pomerleau's Innovation Strategy

During this session we will focus on Pomerleau's Innovation Strategy and the importance of developing an Innovation Management Structure within your company. With the technology invasion into the construction industry, the importance of developing an innovation strategy and adopting technology into your daily operations is imperative. Innovation has always been part of Pomerleau’s core values, and in early 2019 Pomerleau renewed its innovation strategy and the structure required to successfully engage in technology research and development beyond BIM and Virtual Design and Construction. Since then we have been quite active in the innovation market by researching technologies and integrating new processes into Pomerleau work flows. In 2020 Pomerleau will be piloting robotics on our construction sites, Artificial Intelligence for data acquisition and continuing development in software plugin tools, digital twins for owners and advanced Lean scheduling / 4D modeling. In order to do so, our team had to evolve from a team of BIM-VDC Coordinators and Integrators to a broad team that includes software developers, data managers, research managers and technology integration and support staff. We will look at innovation strategy and management in general as we understand that not all companies have the size and budget of a large company like Pomerleau. Use cases will be used from Pomerleau's development strategy and some of our subtrades and owner partners so the discussions can relate to a larger audience.

Leveraging The Collaborative Approach
Leveraging The Collaborative Approach

This presentation speaks to the journey and benefits of adopting the latest trends in the collaborative approach to Design and Construction. It is presented by an industry pioneer and leader in this new methodology in Canada. You will hear how digital technologies, such as Revit, Revizto, TimeLiner and Navisworks to name just a few, supports and enhances the collaborative approach and is paramount to delivering value to the end users of any project. While bringing people together in a BigRoom is a good start, developing a high performing team starts with creating the right team culture - a shared team ideology binds people together and defines how healthy value-based interactions occur. To most effectively use the Tools and Digital Technologies, the team is best served through aligning behaviors that drive towards a collective and measurable goals.

Collaborating - Stronger Together
Collaborating - Stronger Together

We need each other more than ever. BIM offers challenges and opportunities to effective collaboration. Some specific challenges we face are:

  • Use of multiple file sharing platforms
  • Out-of-date Revit files
  • Unknown changes made to Revit models
  • Lost production time spent searching for Revit Families

Autodesk BIM360 and CTC HIVE are effective ways to address these challenges. Some of the benefits include:

  • Centralized location for all Internal and external protect teams members
  • Real-time file sharing and collaboration
  • Compare models and drawings to quickly spot changes
  • Time saving on locating shared content
  • Increased overall project health

In our presentation we will address the benefits of collaborating- stronger together.

3 Levels of Collaboration in Design
3 Levels of Collaboration in Design

Buildings are complex designs that require collaboration of many consultants. Thanks to the evolving technology, we have many tools that can help us achieve collaboration. Although, in the end tools do not guarantee the success of the collaboration process or the design. How they are implemented and how each party is utilizing them can be the determining factor.

In this presentation, we will explore what institutes a good collaboration process and outline the determining factors for it. Following this, we will explore different methods that explore three levels:

  • Collaborating with non-shared systems
  • Collaborating with shared information, utilizing cloud systems
  • Collaborating with real-time BIM data

Advantages and challenges presented by each method, strategies for success will be discussed.

Building Modern Communities with Technology
Building Modern Communities with Technology

As the pressure to build modern “smart” communities intensifies, the building and infrastructure industry continues to turn to new technologies to improve processes, reduce waste, remain competitive and ultimately deliver a better built environment. What technologies are companies using? How are they being used and by whom? What approaches work best for adopting new technology? How have these new technologies been leveraged to answer the call generated by today’s global pandemic to provide rapid response solutions to the need of what can be termed “crisis architecture”? Join us and hear about collaboration benefits of new technology, the challenges to corporate culture, and the importance of developing an innovation strategy.
