Optimizing CAD to CAM Using Sequential Indexed Mechanical Parts with Look-up Enabled Releases

The construction industry is traditionally hindered by outdated processes. Modern Niagara’s introduction of the SIMPLER process not only streamlines the transition from design to execution but also introduces a higher standard of precision and resource management. By enabling field workers to quickly and easily spool their own orders (figure 2) VDC is no longer required to manually generate a large number of spool packages. This allows SIMPLER to significantly cut down on time spent generating orders, production errors and other delays.  In an industry increasingly pressured by tight schedules and environmentally responsible practices, this innovation is essential.

High-Level Solution

SIMPLER’s approach integrates advanced VDC efforts with practical field applications.  By leveraging the robust modeling capabilities of Revit and the automated fabrication precision of CAMDuct, SIMPLER facilitates CAD to CAM with an aligned index-based workflow. This system ensures that all stakeholders in the construction process work from a unified data set.  Data transfers become not only practically effortless but also remarkably accurate. Manufacturing precision and a reduction in the occurrence of errors though the use of in-house scripts (COD & Dynamo) showcases Modern Niagara’s commitment to technological advancement and process optimization.

Solution Details

Once a collision free Revit design is complete, the data is vetted with in-house scripted QA/QC elements. Items are then accurately exported to CAMDuct by leveraging built-in Revit functionality like mass collision (figure 3). Scripted adjustments on both sides of the transfer ensure data integrity.

Field forepersons receive a look-up file to reference additional details for each item.  This indexing system allows for the identification and ordering of parts based on digital or paper copies of blueprints and index files. Field-selected orders are directly exported to the shop in a native CAMDuct format and then filtered down from the much larger VDC release.

The shop now produces material from the model to the highest level of accuracy (figure 4). Weight estimates are more accurate. Shipments to site are easier to track and material is delivered to the correct area of the building.

Business Benefits

Due to its ease of use, the adoption of SIMPLER has led to a more efficient and empowered workforce. Field forepersons play a more hands-on role in the ordering and spooling process of VDC releases (figure 5).  CAMDuct operators and VDC designers can identify repetitive manual tasks and quickly automate them with simple scripts. SIMPLER makes cutting edge technology accessible to a wide range of employees, regardless of their technical background, and tailors it to their own comfort level.

In practice, the SIMPLER process has been used to great effect on several projects, yielding impressive results in efficiency and accuracy. Modern Niagara has found that SIMPLER significantly reduces the number of errors in fabricated parts, cuts down on rework and waste, and leads to savings in every step along the way.

Modern Niagara has seen a decrease in production costs and an increase in profit margins.  This efficiency is a testament to the system’s return on investment. The efficiency gains from using SIMPLER translates into tangible economic value for both Modern Niagara and its clients. This value is not just in monetary terms but also in the enhanced reputation and market positioning as a leader in construction innovation

Conclusion

SIMPLER stands out as a beacon of innovation in a traditionally conservative industry.  By addressing common pain points such as material waste, project delays, labor shortages and labor inefficiency, Modern Niagara has not only improved its competitive stance but has also contributed positively to environmental and economic sustainability.  For Modern Niagara and its clients, this means faster implementation times, fewer compliance issues, and a smoother pathway from concept to construction.  Smarter, faster, and built to constantly evolve, SIMPLER offers a clear view of what the future of construction will look like.
