CanBIM Professional certification is a tiered program providing a benchmark for individuals to be certified to industry-recognized levels of BIM competency and process management. CanBIM Professional certification demonstrates an individual's commitment to utilize BIM/VDC technologies and processes, which supports digital innovation and transformation in the industry.

Certification Levels

CanBIM P1

Key requirements:

  • A general understanding of the BIM process.
  • 790-1000 hours of work experience with BIM theory.
CanBIM P2

Key requirements:

  • Meet the requirements of CanBIM P1.
  • Proficiency with BIM software.
  • 1640-2000 hours of work experience with BIM software.
CanBIM P3

Key requirements:

  • Meet the requirements of CanBIM P2.
  • Advanced proficiency with BIM software.
  • Administration of the BIM process within a designated discipline.
  • 2000-3500 hours of work experience with BIM management.
  • 2500-6000 hours of work experience with BIM software.
CanBIM CP

Key requirements:

  • Meet the requirements of CanBIM P3.
  • Command of all BIM-related software and processes.
  • Defining standard BIM processes and protocols.
  • Company-wide BIM execution and procurement strategies.

Certification Process

1.
Submission
  • Review certification levels and select level that matches your experience.
  • Complete and submit the application form by the next deadline.
2.
Application fee
  • The invoice will arrive shortly after the submission deadline.
  • Payment must be received before the review process can begin.
3.
Review
  • Submissions are reviewed for completeness.
  • Complete applications are submitted for assessment.
4.
Assessment
  • The CanBIM Certification Assessment Panel (CCAP) reviews applications.
  • A decision is made and submitted to the applicant.
5.
Certification fee
  • The invoice will arrive shortly after the assessment decision.
  • Payment must be received before the certification package can be delivered.
6.
Certificate delivery
  • Approved applicants will receive their Certification package by mail or at an upcoming CanBIM event.

Certification Maintenance

Certification is valid for two years. Certified professionals that wish to maintain their certified status may choose to renew their existing level of certification or upgrade to a higher level of certification.

Renew

To maintain the existing level of certification continuing professional development (CPD) is required.

Upgrade

As CanBIM Certified Professionals accumulate experience working within the BIM/VDC process, they may wish to upgrade to a higher certification level. An applicant can advance more than one certification level within one application, provided the applicant meets the submission requirements of the level to which they are applying. To upgrade applicants must complete and submit a certification application for the desired certification level.

Application Deadlines

CanBIM has four Certification rounds per calendar year and four application deadline dates. The chart below indicates the months of each certification round and corresponding application deadline dates. Applications received after the posted deadline will be filed and considered for the subsequent application deadline.
