Summary

In the dynamic realm of construction, complexity in size, duration, and technical requirements has escalated. Delivering projects on time and within budget necessitates efficient digital strategies. Our challenge was to enhance project visualization and management by seamlessly integrating BIM and GIS technologies. This involved automating the creation of project storyboards and addressing the limitations of conventional methods, improving collaboration, and offering accurate, up-to-date insights.

Problem

Projects have become increasingly more complex in size, duration, and technical requirements. To consistently deliver projects on time and within budget, we leverage BIM and GIS to implement digital construction strategies that result in faster, and more accurate delivery in deliverables. An integrated digital delivery approach means all parties along the value chain have access to the same high-quality information in a digital construction environment.

The conventional process of manually generating project storyboards posed significant challenges, consuming time, and hindering project management efficiency. To address this, we have developed a cutting-edge platform that brings together ACC's robust construction modeling capabilities and ESRI GIS's powerful mapping functionalities to visualize storyboard.

Storyboarding is a simple but effective tool for planning and disseminating complex construction project data, with proven benefits for driving collaboration across multiple stakeholders, organizations, and locations.
In response to the challenge of automating the creation of construction project storyboards, our innovative platform seamlessly integrates Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) with the ESRI GIS platform, redefining project visualization and enhancing collaboration. Combining GIS data and BIM models into a centralized 3D dashboard allows stakeholders to anticipate construction related issues through detailed analysis and visualizations.

Solution

The result is visually captivating storyboard that not only enables real-time updates but also fosters improved visualization and seamless project modifications. This innovative feature avoids the traditional method of manual project storyboard generation, ushering in a streamlined and efficient approach. Notably, the developed functionality eliminates the need for intensive manual processes. Moreover, it empowers users from diverse departments to engage with the dataset within a geospatial common data environment, fostering collaborative interaction and informed decision-making.

In Aecon we pride ourselves by moving to a 3D GIS dashboard/storyboarding approach which is also the first step towards unlocking value in other areas. For example, 4D modeling add time information to the asset model, enabling improved realistic construction schedules to be created based on facts rather than subjective opinion. Project management and geospatial monitoring can be compared against a sensible baseline, so corrective action can be taken,
3D dashboards and GIS storyboarding, when utilized in this solution, offer precise measurements and spatial coordination that are crucial in construction. Unlike 2D dashboards, which might lack depth and perspective, 3D dashboards allow for accurate geospatial analysis and identifying potential design conflicts before they become costly issues during construction.

The developed platform aids construction planning by simulating the construction process virtually. This visualization helps construction teams identify potential challenges, plan logistics, and streamline workflows before starting on-site activities.
