Summary

With GAMMA AR, all construction professionals from field workers to VDC managers can visualize BIM models on the construction site on their phones or tablets - no need to invest in new hardware. It makes the building process intuitive, communication unambiguous, and rework avoidable - building it right the first time.

Problem

Rework, which typically constitutes around 10% of construction costs, predominantly stems from misunderstandings or limited information provided in 2D drawings. It often necessitates considerable mental effort to accurately envision these 2D representations (or even 3D models presented in a viewer) within their correct spatial context. The human brain tends to take shortcuts, particularly when multiple perspectives must be simultaneously imagined before the mental eye to comprehend the complete scope of the task. And the shortcuts taken are rather omission of elements or "fitting" the individual elements within the expected outcome without proper double-checking. These shortcuts often result in perceived simplifications and deviations from the original design, when executing the task at hand, frequently at the detriment of subsequent trades and workers who must adapt to the "new given situation." This leads to extensive discussions and idle time of whole teams, extensive coordination efforts, delays, and increased costs.

All this, while the initial issue could have been preempted if the first worker had the opportunity to visualize precisely what was intended and how it integrated with other trades down the line. While there may still be instances where due to misaligned incentives workers could opt to deviate from the plan, having the ability to cross-check with the design and potentially reaching out to a coordinator before the deviation could avert future surprises for following workers.

A key challenge arising in front of any technological solution is ensuring that it is user-friendly for non-tech-savvy workers and does not disrupt established workflows.

Solution

Using any tablet or phone, construction professionals can visualize the 3D models that are provided by their design/office workers directly on the construction site. By holding their tablet up and looking through it around them, they can see how the building will look like in every detail - seeing the model in full scale on the correct spot (without being "BIM experts" - simplicity is at the very core of GAMMA AR).

This allows to understand better what needs to be built, but also spot mistakes or anticipate execution problems in an intuitive manner (not all models, even being clash-free are actually constructible, which can only be checked in the field by experienced people). The follow-up on identified deviations, observations or issues happens then by simply tapping on the element and creating an object-based "issue", which is then automatically synchronized to the client's usual issue-management tool (e.g. Autodesk or Procore products) thus not replacing or adding to the workflows, but complementing them.

In a nutshell, GAMMA AR provides an intuitive solution that is set to replace interpretation and memorization of 2D drawings in the container in front of the job site by bringing the model directly to the site, i.e. in its correct spatial context.
